HASS Research Centres and Clusters
Nanyang Centre for Public Administration (NCPA)
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) set up the Nanyang Centre for Public Administration (NCPA) in December 2009 under its College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences (HASS). The Centre aims to enhance the training of Chinese officials and public administrators and spearhead China-related research on public administration and economic management.
Building on NTU’s strengths and expertise in delivering high quality education programmes for Chinese officials and senior administrators, NCPA taps on the university’s rich interdisciplinary resources by bringing together eminent scholars from the different colleges and schools within NTU for programme development, teaching and research.
The centre also engages acclaimed public administration industry practitioners, who specialise in the research and teaching of China’s sociology, economy, politics, public administration and environmental issues, to share their valuable insights on Singapore’s model of public governance.
Centre for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS)
The Centre for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) is the trans-disciplinary research centre of the College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences.
Established in 2006, it brings together researchers from various fields – including English, Chinese, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Linguistics, Communications, and Art, Design & Media – so as to open new registers of thinking within their respective discourses through seminars, lectures, workshops, conferences, exhibitions and other platforms.
CLASS aims to facilitate interactions between local and international scholars who are attempting to rethink the boundaries of their disciplines.
Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA)
The Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) Singapore was developed by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) with support of Singapore's Economic Development Board. Located in Gillman Barracks alongside a cluster of international galleries, the CCA operates as a local hub with an international perspective under the leadership of Professor Ute Meta Bauer, the CCA’s Founding Director. CCA embraces academic and scholarly research with contemporary art as knowledge production in its own right. CCA incorporates a holistic approach towards art and culture, intertwining a variety of programmes from exhibitions, public programmes to research and residencies.
Centre of Social Media Innovation for Communities (COSMIC)
The vision of COSMIC - the Centre of Social Media Innovations for Communities - is to empower communities, through social media innovations that improve the way they live, work and play, specifically those in the informal economy who are typically underserved by existing technology vendors and telecom service providers.
The research investigates new interaction paradigms and information technology scenarios, which have the potential to empower the next large user group - focusing on the common man in his everyday pursuit of activities in the 21st century.
Digital Intangible Heritage of Asia (DIHA)
Digital Intangible Heritage of Asia (DIHA), a research and development cluster at NTU College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS), aims to capture the vibrant cultural and linguistic fusion of the Asia-Pacific region through interdisciplinary lenses.
The research cluster, supported by the College's New Silk Road Seed Grant (Ng Bee Chin, PI, Francesco Cavallaro Co-I and Halina Gottlieb, Collaborator, and Co-Founder, 2011 – 2015), has completed several projects in this novel field. DIHA brings together linguists, historians, designers, interactive media specialists, computer engineers, scientists and museum curators from different parts of the university as well as external collaborators (e.g. Nordic Digital Excellence in Museums and Heritage, Nordic Council of Ministers, National Heritage Board, ACM and ArtScience Museum in Singapore).
In its inception, the research cluster began with a specialised focus on language as a primary source of intangible heritage. This has spawned several projects with collaborators from diverse disciplines in the College. These collaborations have led to two successful AcRF Tier 2 grants and several AcRF Tier 1 grants. Overall, more than 20 faculty members and 100 students in the College are/have been involved in this research cluster. Given the accelerated interest from colleagues across different Schools, the focus has expanded to include other forms of intangible heritage. The College envisages that this collaboration will result in the conservation, visualisation and interpretation of cultural heritage, which is accessible to both researchers and society. In the long term, DIHA hopes to serve as a focal point of excellence in bridging tangible and intangible heritage.
