Four opposition parties are set to form a new alliance to contest the next Singapore general election, which has to be called by April next year. Singaporeans First party, Democratic Progressive Party, People’s Power Party and Reform Party aim to register the alliance at the end of this month. NTU Public Policy and Global Affairs programme Asst Prof Walid Jumblatt said it would be challenging for the new alliance to be “electorally potent”. “After all, none of the four parties and their members have demonstrated their ability to win an electoral contest,” he said. But it could stand a chance of being effective if it is clear about its party platform and ideology, and recruit credible members and candidates.
