Our EU Centre Associate Fellow Prof Reuben Wong co-wrote a commentary with Walid Jumblatt Abdullah (PhD candidate in political science, NUS-King’s College London joint degree programme) on French foreign policy and social integration which was published in The Straits Times on 25 November 2015.
The deadly attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015 has confronted France with a crisis of similar proportions to the one then US faced after September 11, 2001. Should France pursue a limited war against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), or should it go further and ally with the US and Russia to redraw the larger map in the Middle East? In a growing climate of Islamophobia, how should France engage with French Muslims who now make up between 7 and 10 per cent of the total French population today?
In this commentary, the authors appealed for moderation in French foreign policy response; but also toleration and pro-active French social integration policy vis-a-vis its fast-growing Muslim population.
