Tax evasion in Europe’s governance

Tax evasion 

EU Centre Associate Fellow andjournalist with the Swiss daily Le Temps Richard Werly has written an article for The Jakarta Post on 4 May 2013 on the fight against tax evasion and banking secrecy. As the US negotiates agreements on the FATCA (Foreign Accounts Tax compliance Act) with its prominent financial partners including Singapore, the pressure is on the EU to implement an automatic exchange of tax information between its 27 member states.

Mr Werly argues that while the EU is right to combat tax evasion, part of the problem lies in its own past shortcomings in governance.
