Why 2014 can be the year of Europe

Richard Werly, Associate Fellow at the EU Centre and an international correspondent for the Swiss daily Le Temps, has written an op-ed for the Jakarta Post entitled “Why 2014 can be the year of Europe” (published Thursday 9 Jan 2014).

In this article, Richard argues that while the (old) continent is still facing a serious economic crisis, it has also fuelled a strong thirst for more Europe. Politicians from liberals to greens are promising to campaign for a stronger EU, and a banking union that affords greater protection to consumers has finally been brokered. Indeed, 2014 looks like a year when Europe may also benefit from the decline in US global power, and European businesses and voters can start to rediscover the potential of their own continent.

The article is available for free on The Jakarta Post website as well TODAY.
