The EU Centre celebrated the 9th of May (Europe Day) at the NUS Shaw Foundation Alumni House. Representatives of public and private sector, academia, students and general public joined the EU Centre in Singapore in this celebration.

The 9th of May marks the anniversary of the so-called “Schuman declaration” announced in in 1950 by Robert Schuman, then French foreign minister, leading to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community and marked the beginning of the European integration process.

His Excellency, Dr Michael Pulch opened the event by reminding the audience that besides being the anniversary of the Schuman declaration, the European Union is also celebrating in 2014 the 10th anniversary of its enlargement to include many of the former Soviet satellite states in Eastern and Central Europe with the end of the Cold War. He shared his memories of a Europe divided by the Cold War and of the spirit of the people in that unique moment when Europe was once again brought together with the symbolic dismantling of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Together with Dr. Yeo Lay Hwee, Director of EU Centre in Singapore, he also congratulated and awarded the certificates to the winners of the Infographics Competition: The EU and Singapore: Policy Challenges and Mutual Learning, a theme present throughout the event.

Eight dancers then took the stage to present Greek folk dances. This added a special energy and flavour to the event. The Greek danSING group shared with guests a choice of five Greek folk dances and created a very cheerful atmosphere among the audience. More details on the dances can be found in the group’s info leaflet in the downloads section above.

The Europe Day celebrations ended with an interactive session with three young Europeans residing in Singapore sharing with the audience their perspectives on issues of immigration and diversity, the challenges facing Europe, and their dreams and hopes.
