Asia-Europe Conference 2019, 1-2 August, Kuala Lumpur

Asia-Europe Conference 2019-500x334

The Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaya, one of the key partners of the Jean Monnet network led by the EU Centre, organised the Asia-Europe Conference 2019 on the theme “Europe in the New Asia: New Anxieties, New Construct”.

The conference brought together experts from academe, diplomacy and industry to deliberate on how to make sense of the current challenges in global politics, examine the current developments in regional security architectures in Europe and Asia, and the impact of emerging new constructs such as the Indo-Pacific and the Belt and Road initiative on regional and international order.

The conference was opened by the Malaysian Deputy Minister of Defence YB Senator Liew Chin Tong.

In this conference, Dr Yeo Lay Hwee, Director of the EU Centre spoke about the emerging security architectures, and how the two foremost regional organisations, the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should be forging closer ties and be in the forefront of building bridges between the two regions – Asia and Europe – by linking and connecting different forums and institutions and creating a dense web of cooperative networks to manage the increasingly volatile and uncertain environment.
