Brexit, Trump and Europe’s Geopolitical Awakening

Prof. Luuk van Middelaar, Professor at the Europa Institute of Leiden University and formerly policy adviser and speech writer for the first President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, gave a lecture on “Brexit, Trump and Europe’s Geopolitical Awakening”. He elaborated on how the EU, seeing itself as a normative power rather than a geopolitical big player, realised the need to step up its geopolitical game, in order to defend the multilateral/liberal order, after the retreat of the US as the global champion of the free world. According to Prof. Middelaar, Brexit and the election of Trump have been a dual shock for the EU, stirring up the bloc’s alertness to the geopolitical game and reflections on European integration, and hence leading to the shiftfrom emphasis on “politics of rule” to “politics of events”.
