The October 2017 issue of the quarterly newsletter, Scene@CMM is out. The highlight of this issue features the successfully concluded inaugural Summer School in Brussels 2017, organised as one of the key activities under the Jean Monnet Network (JMN) funding, as well as the success in working with the EU Centre’s partners, University of Indonesia and Maastricht University, to support the 3rd AEI-ASEM Summer School organised by the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), University of Malaya before the inaugural Summer School in Brussels.

Summer School 2017 in Brussels

The inaugural Summer School in Brussels 2017 organised as one of the key activities under the Jean Monnet Network (JMN) funding was successfully concluded in Brussels at 5pm on 11 August 2017. This one-week programme in Brussels followed the two-week programme in Kuala Lumpur which was held under the framework of Asia-Europe Institute’s ASEM Summer School on the theme of Cultural Pluralism in Asia and Europe. A total of 23 students from various Singaporean, Southeast Asian and European Universities participated in the Summer School. All participants of the Summer School received a certification of participation. Group photos were also taken to mark the success of the 2017 Summer School.

AEI-ASEM Summer School 2017


Malaysia 24 July to 4 August 2017 (2 weeks), Brussels 7 August to 11 August 2017 (1 week)

Before the inaugural Summer School in Brussels, the EU Centre worked with its partners University of Indonesia and Maastricht University, to support the 3rd AEI-ASEM Summer School organised by the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), University of Malaya. The 3rd AEI-ASEM Summer School programme 2017 with the theme “Cultural Pluralism in Asia and Europe” was successfully conducted from 24 July to 4 August 2017. Participants of this programme spent 2 weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and then one proceeded to Brussels for the one week programme focusing on regionalism and multilateralism.

EU Ambassador designate to Singapore – Barbara Plinkert 
Barbara Plinkert, the new EU Ambassador to Singapore, begins her term as the EU Ambassador-designate to Singapore at a historically significant time: in 2017, the EU has turned 60 and ASEAN 50; and the EU and ASEAN mark 40 years of ties. In addition, Singapore’s importance as a regional partner will be further emphasized in the coming years by its simultaneous position as ASEAN chair in 2018 and its three-year role as ASEAN’s coordinator for EU relations.

The EU Centre, together with the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) of the University of Malaya and the EU Delegation to Malaysia jointly organised Asia-Europe Conference 2017 on the broad theme “Is it time for Europe to play a bigger role in Asia”. The conference took place on 3-4 August at AEI.
 
ASEAN DAY 2017 – Social Media Contest
on 8 August 2017
8th of August is ASEAN Day – the day when the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. ASEAN, an important regional organization, has since grown to include Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and

European Security in the Face of Russian, Terrorism and Migration Threats
on 19 September 2017
EU Centre’s Visiting Fellow, Dr David Garcia Cantalapiedra gave a public lecture on 7 September on “The Future of EU Defence Integration Post-Brexit” and on 19 September 2017, he gave a talk to students and faculty from the College of Alice and Peter Tan (CAPT) on “European Security in the Face of Russian, Terrorism and Migration Threats”.
