Regional Initiatives to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion: A Case Study of the European Union

The EU Centre has published a background brief on “Regional Initiatives to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion: A Case Study of the European Union” on the issues concerning poverty and social exclusion in the EU, and the EU-level initiatives taken to address them.

The background brief takes stock of the current social reality in the EU, in the light of 2010 being the European Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Particular attention is paid to the plight of migrants and minorities, as well as the urban dimension of poverty. The brief examines the capacity of regional actors such as the EU to target what are largely regional and local issues, and how regional funds are used to address them.
